I'm a young self-taught pencil artist based in Canberra. My name is Rika but as an artist I go by my middle name, Marlee. I'm currently studying architecture and am inspired by the sensory details of the built interior and often feature perspectives of places particular to personal experiences.
I work predominantly with graphite and wax pencils on large paper canvasses, I'm also looking to further experiment with video and installation work. I want to communicate a sense of place with dark monochrome tones and deep interior perspectives, accentuating the way light can bring both energy and a kind of stillness to a space. My most recent work has featured scenes from my experience as a chronically ill teen, during long hospital admissions and days dealing with debilitating symptoms. My practice in the past has been an experimentation with realistic portraits and figurative drawing and painting studies. A notable exhibition was at the 100 Canberra exhibition with the centenarian portrait project by teenagers, my work 'Laurie' in a green monochrome won the people's choice award.
